About the School of Social Sciences

The School of Social Sciences was established in 1997 comprising five major innovative academic Departments of Commerce, Economics, History and Archaeology, Political Science and Sociology. The School of Social Sciences being one of the oldest and distinguished centres of learning has a long lineage of strengthening the academic fabric of Nagaland university and it embodies cohesiveness of multiple disciplines that instantly seek its relevance in understanding and analyzing human behavior in an integrated framework. The school has two centres namely Tribal Research Centre and Centre for South-East Asian Studies. The courses offered by the School of Social Sciences aim at imparting and generating knowledge on emerging issues and problems of contemporary society, economy and polity.

The curricula developed and taught in all the Departments under the School of Social Sciences are updated from time to time emphasizing on latest academic trends in the line with the NEP. The advanced research on current sociological issues undertaken by the scholars of the Departments aim to provide impetus to frame policy guidelines to the policy makers to provide solutions to burning/current sociological issues.

The course structure is choice based, flexible and is interdisciplinary. The pedagogy and didactics are interactive and based on field learning. The academic format places great emphasis on student initiative. The evaluation is continuous and grade based. At the end of the course, a student would be equipped with analytical skills, social science theoretical knowledge based on empirical and field-based learning. Thus, a student with this kind of learning can look forward to careers in teaching, management, research, policy making, development sector, media and administration.
The faculties of the School representing established Universities of the Country have done significant academic works. The School has hosted scores of scholars and researchers whose contribution has been recognized and acclaimed world over.

The first quarter of the 21st century is witnessing the unprecedented changes brought about by information communication technology (ICT), Systems of Cybernetics & informatics and the overall changes brought about by techno-electronic development. The bio-technological revolutions all over the world are going to control population genetics and human nature. It is in this reference that the importance of social sciences has gained global concern. Since economy, polity and social structure are the major themes of studies of social sciences and all scientific researches and technological innovations are ultimately meant for the betterment of society and humanity at large. Therefore, the social scientists in the wake of modern changes have to emerge as social designers, as interpreters and as social theorists of economy and polity. The School of Social Sciences has presented landmark impacts with the help of the rigorous exercises done by the Sociologists, Economists, Political Scientists, Historians and Archaeologist. Many of the Faculty members have earned national and international reputations.

 

Vision

The School of Social Sciences aims to promote excellence in teaching and research by nurturing a culture of enquiry based learning, and grooming students to be morally and socially responsible professionals who are sensitive to the larger societal good. The School of Social Sciences of the Nagaland University, Lumami seeks to make a positive social impact through a global presence, regional significance and engagement with the rest of India through her five academic departments, viz., Commerce, Economic, History and Archaeology, Political Science and Sociology. The school aims to encourage students to develop an analytical and creative mind with inclusive and global perspectives to serve the society and region.

To attain excellence in teaching and research in the areas of social sciences thereby preparing professional leaders to think critically, read deeply, communicate effectively, and to address the emerging global challenges, and to deal with socio-economic-cultural-political realities. The mission and goals of the School of Social Sciences value innovative learning experiences that will enable our students to develop broad tolerant perspectives so that they will be better prepared to function in a diverse, demanding, and global society. To further the school of social sciences mission and encourage a climate of shared solidarity, creativity, and excellence, it values the following:
